Planning a Ladakh holiday? Along with your flights, hotels and sightseeing itinerary, check your mobile connection before departure. Arriving without a working number can make airport pickups, hotel calls and payment verification unnecessarily difficult.
If you use a prepaid SIM issued outside Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, do not expect it to work in Ladakh. An eligible postpaid connection is the practical option to arrange before travelling. NDTV’s October 2026 report highlights this frequently overlooked travel issue.
Here is how to prepare for your trip and avoid depending on a signal when you need it most.
There are two separate reasons you might lose connectivity: restrictions affecting your connection and a lack of mobile coverage.
Ladakh Police’s tourist guidance says that only postpaid mobile connections work because of security restrictions. Visitors should therefore check their connection type before travelling, particularly if their number was issued elsewhere in India.
For example, someone travelling from Pune or Mumbai with an outside-region prepaid number should arrange an alternative before leaving. Adding more data to that prepaid plan does not address the underlying roaming restriction.
No. Having a suitable connection and being within network coverage are different things.
Ladakh Police describes internet connectivity as good in Leh but limited in rural areas. Even with postpaid, you should prepare for stretches without service.
Treat mobile internet as a convenience during your journey, and keep essential information available offline.
Choose a provider based on your planned route rather than a general claim that one network is best everywhere.
Coverage has expanded in parts of Ladakh. For example, Airtel announced network improvements in April 2024 covering locations including Leh, Pangong Lake, Diskit and Turtuk, alongside major mountain passes. That announcement does not guarantee uninterrupted reception throughout the surrounding region.
Before choosing a connection:
Ask your driver or tour operator which provider currently works at your overnight stops.
Check coverage for your specific hotels and villages.
Confirm your connection’s eligibility directly with the mobile operator.
Ask about calls, SMS and data separately if you need all three.
If you currently use prepaid, ask your operator about converting to postpaid or obtaining a suitable additional connection.
Confirm the activation process, required verification, billing terms and whether the connection will work in Ladakh. Leave enough time to complete the process before departure.
Keep screenshots or downloaded copies of:
Flight tickets and hotel bookings.
Your driver’s name and contact number.
The agreed airport meeting point.
Your itinerary and accommodation addresses.
Any travel permits or documents required for your route.
Share your arrival arrangements with your driver in advance, so the pickup does not depend on a last-minute phone call.
Carry a reasonable amount of cash for small purchases and stops where digital payments may be difficult.
Remember that internet access and SMS access are different. Hotel Wi-Fi may let you use messaging apps, but it does not make a non-working SIM receive ordinary SMS verification codes.
Complete important bookings and account checks before travelling.
Download offline maps for your planned route while you have reliable internet. Save accommodation locations and key stops separately.
Carry a power bank and charging cable so your offline information remains accessible throughout the day.
A local connection may be an alternative. NDTV identifies obtaining a local connection as one option for visitors whose existing SIM will not work.
Check availability, accepted documents, eligibility and activation time with an authorised operator outlet. Avoid building your arrival plans around an assumption that a new SIM will activate immediately.
For trips far from populated areas, discuss communication arrangements with your tour operator before booking.
The Ladakh administration introduced a process through BSNL for private tour operators to procure satellite phones for tourism purposes. Travellers considering remote expeditions can ask operators whether they have authorised communication equipment and an emergency plan.
A prepaid SIM issued outside Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh should not be relied on there. Arrange a suitable connection before departure.
An eSIM is a SIM format. Check the underlying plan, issuing region and roaming eligibility with the provider rather than assuming an eSIM will bypass restrictions.
Ask your accommodation about availability and reliability before booking. Keep essential documents and contact details offline even when Wi-Fi is advertised.
If a call is essential, confirm connectivity with your accommodation and allow a backup day or location. Avoid scheduling critical meetings during road journeys.
A little preparation makes a big difference: confirm your SIM’s eligibility, save your travel essentials offline and agree on communication arrangements before heading into remote areas.
